The following questions are frequently asked regarding DAN's Oxygen and AED Grant Programs. If you have additional questions, please contact DAN Training.
What grants are available from DAN Training?
DAN Training coordinates two grant programs, The Oxygen Grant Program and The AED Matching Grant Program.
Who is eligible?
Both grant programs are open to individuals, businesses and organizations with a connections to scuba diving and/or aquatics and can demonstrate a financial need for assistance. Applicants must come from DAN America region. They cannot represent a federal organization. Applicants for the AED Matching Grant must be U.S.-based.
Who determines who receives the grants?
DAN Training coordinates the committees, which are made up of representatives from DAN Training, Development, Medical Services, Medical Research and Continuing Medical Education.
Why do I need to submit my operating budget?
Requests for financial assistance require us to confirm your financial need. We keep all budget information confidential.
If I’m awarded a grant, what am I required to do?
In your grant application, you agree to provide us with documentation and photos of the unit which you have received. You agree to send us a copy of your protocol, and will follow up with us annually. Please tell us any time equipment awarded through the Grant Program is used in an emergency. This allows us to track the effectiveness of the two programs.
To apply do we have to be DAN Members?
While we appreciate membership and rely on it for support, grant applicants need not be required to be DAN members. Since we are here to help should the need arise, we do suggest membership in DAN. We want to keep you informed regarding diving safety and health.
What happens if we miss the deadline?
There are four Oxygen Grant cycles each year and three AED Matching Grant cycles. If you miss a deadline, DAN will automatically consider your application during the next cycle.
What happens if DAN receives more grant requests than grants available to be awarded? Will you give more?
We reserve the right to award more grants as we believe necessary.
We have EMTs and paramedics. Why do we have to take a DAN training course to be eligible for a grant?
We want to assure people are trained in the use of equipment specific to scuba diving and aquatic emergencies. Since these areas are relatively unique, most standard first aid courses and courses for medical professionals do not cover these areas specifically.
How are DAN grant programs funded?
DAN grant programs are solely funded by donations and other fundraising efforts.
We live outside the DAN America region but want to apply for an oxygen grant. Can you help us?
The Oxygen Grant Program is only available to those in the DAN America region, which includes North America, South America and the Caribbean.
How do you decide what oxygen unit we receive?
The decision on which oxygen unit to award is based on what the committee feels is in the best interest of the applicant and is ultimately determined from the details provided in the application
Who pays for maintenance of the oxygen unit?
All costs for maintenance and replacement supplies are the responsibility of the recipient.

What AED unit is used?
The AED Matching Grant program uses a Philips Heartstart FRx AED.
Can we apply for grant money for spare pads and batteries?
The recipient of the grant is responsible for the maintaining the units and replacing used or expired items.
What does it mean that medical direction is needed?
The Food & Drug Administration considers AEDs medical devices. To acquire and use an AED, one must have medical direction, which means that an FDA-authorized person is approved for purchasing the AED and is responsible for the general operation of it. (Exs. physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioners.)
We don’t have a physician who will give us this permission. Is this available through DAN?
DAN Medical Directors do not supply medical direction for applicants to the AED Matching Grant program. There are companies that have physicians who will supply and maintain medical direction. We can assist you with contacting one. However, the grant will not pay for this service.
We want to get an AED but live outside the United States. Can’t you make an exception?
No. Because of manufacturer and governmental restrictions on AEDs, we cannot ship the devices outside the United States.
We can’t afford the match for the AED Matching Grant. Will you give us more?
To maximize the numbers of grants we can award and to maintain the integrity of the program, we provide a 50/50 match.
